About Tribal Probation Academy
Welcome to the Tribal Probation Academy. This one-of-a-kind program is the only national training resource dedicated specifically to the unique challenges and duties of Tribal Probation Officers across Indian Country.
Tribal Probation Officers play a vital role on the front lines of tribal justice, supporting the rehabilitation and reintegration of individuals within their communities. Their work helps strengthen local justice systems, enhance public safety, and foster healing and positive change throughout tribal communities. Graduates help make a lasting, positive impact in the communities they serve.
The Academy follows three important tenets

Program Overview
The Basic Tribal Probation Academy gives students the opportunity to complete 120 hours of combined classroom training and practicum experience. The academy is structured as a three-week program, delivered over three months with one week of training each month. Participants gain knowledge in 45 key topics. The topics include how to:

Assist with Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons cases

Recognize signs of elder and child abuse,
-
Supervise individuals with mental illness
-
Write clear and effective reports
-
Explore alternatives to incarceration

David Rogers
Senior Tribal Public Safety Advisor
David J. Rogers is the creator of the original Tribal Probation Academy in 2007 and has continued to upgrade and build the program which now being offered through Justice & Security Strategies, Inc. (JSS). David is a member of the Nez Perce Tribe if Idaho and has over 50 years in law enforcement, probation and training & technical assistance in service for the betterment and safety of tribal communities.
